How to Clean a Laptop Screen Without Damaging It (Step-by-Step)
The safe, manufacturer-approved way to clean any laptop screen — MacBook, matte, or touchscreen — plus the three products you should never let near a display.
Cleaning a laptop screen the wrong way can permanently damage its coating. Here is the method screen manufacturers actually recommend, in five steps.
What you need
- A clean microfiber cloth (not a paper towel, not a t-shirt)
- A screen-safe cleaning spray — alcohol-free and ammonia-free
- Two minutes
Step 1: Power down and unplug
Turn the laptop off. A dark screen shows smudges better, and wiping a powered screen can trigger inputs on touchscreens.
Step 2: Dry-wipe first
Sweep the dry microfiber cloth in gentle, wide strokes from top to bottom. This removes loose dust that could otherwise scratch when you wipe with pressure.
Step 3: Spray the cloth, never the screen
Apply 2–3 sprays of screen cleaner to the cloth until slightly damp, not wet. Spraying the screen directly lets liquid wick into the bezel and behind the panel — the most common cause of edge blotches.
Step 4: Wipe in one direction
Wipe in straight, overlapping passes from top to bottom with light pressure. Circular scrubbing redistributes oils and causes swirl marks on coatings.
Step 5: Buff with the dry side
Flip the cloth to the dry side and make one final pass to lift any remaining moisture. The screen should dry streak-free within seconds.
What you should NEVER use on a laptop screen
- Window cleaner (Windex) — contains ammonia, which strips anti-glare coatings.
- Rubbing alcohol or alcohol wipes — degrades oleophobic coatings on touchscreens.
- Paper towels or tissues — wood fibers are abrasive and leave micro-scratches.
How often should you clean your screen?
Once a week for laptops you touch (touchscreens or frequently pointed-at displays), every two weeks otherwise. Keyboards transfer oil to screens on closed laptops, so clean both together.
